Introduction to Electronic Warfare ( 3 day in-house course )

Introduction to Electronic Warfare (EW)

Overview

This course introduces the fundamentals of Electronic Warfare (EW) and how it is applied in the modern military context. The goal is to allow students to glean insights into the application of EW and understand why this is an increasingly important focus area for modern militaries across the world. The course will first start with a review on the application of EW in modern warfare. Towards explaining the application of EW, the course will then deep-dive into explaining common vulnerabilities in Military Communication Systems to provide context on how communication systems can be exploited on the battlefield. Thereafter, the course will discuss principles of EA(electronic attack ) & ES( Electronic Support)  and how countermeasures in the form of EP ( electronic protection) can be developed to counter the effects of EA & ES. The course will also elicit student learning through formative assessment in the form of mini-quizzes, case study discussions and students will be required to complete a mini-project as part of the summative assessment.

Learning Outcome

  • Explain common vulnerabilities of communications systems used in modern warfare
  • Explain the principles of EA used in modern warfare
  • Explain the principles of passive EP measures in modern warfare
  • Explain the principles of pro-active EP measures in modern warfare

About the Speaker

The lecturer Bill Eng is a pioneer in the field of electronic warfare – communications EW & navigation warfare since the 1980s. in the 1980s, he has developed the early frequency hopping radios & spread spectrum radios. In 1990s, he developed the first follow-on jammers against frequency hopping radios & counter-measures against follow-on jamming.  In 2000s, he developed GPS jammers, anti-jam adaptive antennas & GPS spoofers.

Bill has conducted courses in EW for more than 3 years attended by staff from DSO, DSTA, ST Engineering, DIS, Signals institute, HTX, SLA etc . He has been invited to conduct talks at TDSI such as this  talk on why Ukrainian GPS-guided munitions are missing targets due to EW & countermeasures.
